YHFD holds open house, fire prevention day

Families visited the Yorktown Heights Engine Co. No. 1 fire station Sunday for its annual Fire Prevention Day and Open House.

Visitors toured fire apparatus, including Engine 274, Ladder 51, Rescue 55, Rescue 16, and the district’s utility UTV, while firefighters demonstrated vehicle extrication techniques to show how they safely remove trapped occupants.

Interactive activities included trying on firefighter gear, spraying a fire hose, taking photos with a firefighter cutout, and visiting a smoke detector and fire prevention station. Two smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were raffled off, and the Engine Co. No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary offered cupcakes, cookies, and other refreshments. Entertainment was provided by DJ Frank, who used a 1934 fire engine as his DJ booth, while Yorktown Police Detective Sergeant Thomas Beyrer and K-9 Dallas gave demonstrations for children.

The Yorktown Heights Fire District, which has been fully volunteer since 1909, recently received voter approval to replace the Commerce Street station with a modern facility.
