Voters OK $30M Yorktown Heights firehouse bond

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y.—Voters in the Yorktown Heights Fire District gave the green light to a $30 million bond to fund construction of a new firehouse.

About 65 percent of voters voted to approve the bond. According to results provided to Yorktown News by Fire District Secretary-Treasurer Jeanmarie Klaus, 446 people voted in the Sept. 30 special election, with 288 in favor and 158 opposed.

The Yorktown Heights Fire District covers about 36 square miles and provides fire protection to roughly 30,000 residents and businesses. The proposition sought approval for the construction of a new three-story, 24,200-square-foot firehouse at 1916 Commerce St., the site of the existing building.

The new facility will be designed to meet current building codes and safety standards. Planned improvements include higher ceilings and wider bays to accommodate larger apparatus, as well as additional space to support the department’s operations and training needs.

With voter approval, the district will move forward with the project. The total estimated cost is $30 million. The bond, not to exceed that amount, will finance construction and be repaid through taxes. For a home assessed at $10,500, the average taxpayer is expected to see a $21.12 monthly increase, officials said, or about $250 annually.

In a Facebook post on Oct. 1, the all-volunteer agency expressed thanks to its voters.

"This project is not a luxury; it is a vital necessity to ensure the Fire District can meet the evolving needs required to best serve and protect every resident and business," the agency wrote. "Updating our facilities is critical for operational efficiency, firefighter safety, and maintaining the high level of emergency response you expect and deserve.

The agency went on to emphasize the importance of the community’s support.

"Your investment in this project is an investment in the future security of the Yorktown Heights Fire District and the entire community," they wrote. "Thank you, once again, for your incredible support and trust."

Residents who have questions about the project can visit YHFDistrictNY.org, where they can also view project progress and updates.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2026 and take about 18 months.
