A 13-year-old student has been charged after allegedly choking another child on a school bus, Yorktown police said.

The incident came to light after Yorktown police received a complaint on Saturday, March 14, regarding an earlier incident, prompting an investigation, the department announced Thursday, March 26.

According to police, the juvenile, whose name is being withheld due to age, was identified as the suspect following the investigation. Authorities said that while on a school bus, the 13-year-old girl placed her hand on the neck of a 12-year-old student for several seconds, obstructing the victim’s ability to breathe.

The condition of the 12-year-old student is unknown. It was also unclear which district the bus, on which the incident took place, belonged to.

The suspect has been charged with juvenile delinquency, with the underlying offense being criminal obstruction of breathing, a class A misdemeanor if committed by an adult. A juvenile appearance ticket was served to the girl’s parent on March 24.

She is scheduled to appear at the Westchester County Department of Probation on April 9 at 2 p.m.
