Yorktown Heights Volunteer FD seeks recruits

Posted

The Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department is accepting applications from highly motivated individuals for its 2026 Spring/Summer Probationary Volunteer Firefighter Orientation Program, “Probie Class 26‑01.”

Launched in 2020 after five years of research and development by department officers, the YHFD Probationary Volunteer Firefighter Orientation Program has become a successful in-house training program. It consists of more than two months of intensive classroom and hands-on instruction. The program is designed to prepare new members to meet and exceed the academic and physical requirements of the NYS Firefighter 1 curriculum. For members with previous experience or certifications, the program provides a formal introduction to YHFD equipment and operations while completing required rookie task books at an accelerated pace.

Applications are due by March 1.

YHFD is considered one of the busiest and most aggressive all-volunteer fire companies in Northern Westchester that does not respond to EMS calls and is the only 100 percent volunteer first-responder agency in the Town of Yorktown. In 2025, firefighters responded to 753 calls for service, including 22 working structural fires, 102 motor vehicle accidents, nearly a dozen vehicle extrications, nine vehicle fires, and more than 90 mutual aid responses assisting other agencies in Westchester and Putnam counties.

Applicants do not need prior experience. The department provides all equipment, training and resources needed to succeed. For more information and applications visit yorktownfire.org/content/recruit.
