YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y.—A Yorktown Heights home was destroyed by fire Monday, leaving a family displaced just weeks before the holidays.
Yorktown Heights FD arrived at the Ridge St. home on Dec. 1 to find flames spreading through both the first and second floors, First Assistant Chief Matt Lauria said. No one was home at the time.
The family’s cat, initially unaccounted for, was rescued and taken to a local veterinarian, Lauria said. Three adult occupants—all uninjured—are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, he added.
More than two dozen volunteer firefighters responded to the two-and-a-half-story house on Ridge Street. They worked to contain the blaze and briefly entered the home to check the second floor.
The fire is under investigation by the Westchester Cause & Origin Task Force, Lauria said.
Once under control, the scene and structure were turned over to the Yorktown Building Department and the homeowner. Officials thanked neighboring departments for their support during the incident, one of several fires reported in the district that day.
Family and neighbors have rallied around the residents, organizing donations of clothing, toiletries and other essential items to help them recover.
