YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Yorktown police are searching for scammers who conned a local resident out of $20,000 in cash in an online scam.
Investigators from Yorktown PD said on Thursday, May 8, the victim received a pop-up alert on their computer with a message that said child porn had been detected on their device. The victim called the phone number on the pop-up and spoke with someone claiming to be a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) representative. The scammer falsely verified that there is child pornography on the computer and that the cost for removal would be more than $20,000 in cash. The victim was provided with specific instructions on withdrawing cash funds from their bank, specifically telling bank employees, if asked about the large withdrawal, that the funds are needed for a home improvement project.
The victim withdrew the funds and contacted the scammer. The suspect, described as an Asian male, quickly arrived at the residence to retrieve the money. He then left on foot, with no vehicle in sight that the victim could observe.
This incident occurred between 3 and 3:45 p.m. at or near Ravencrest Road.
Police said some residents provided home security videos to review. Investigators are asking residents who live on Ravencrest Roadand the Curry Sreet area to review their video footage between the time frame reported. Call police at 914-962-4141 and ask to speak with a member of the Detective Bureau. Residents may email information via info@yorktownpd.org.
“We once again remind the public that these types of scams are not going away any time soon,” Yorktown PD said in a prepared statement. “For those who ask, ‘How can someone fall for this and pay out this type of cash?’ these scammers can be quite convincing. No shame here.”
