The New York State Police issued a total of 9,912 tickets statewide during the Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign, including 591 by Troop K, which serves Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Columbia counties.

The campaign ran from Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 and included sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and enforcement targeting speeding, impaired and distracted driving. The initiative was partially funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

According to a Sept. 10 press release, troopers issued 280 speeding tickets, 12 for distracted driving, 11 for child restraint and seat belt violations, and five Move Over Law violations— which requires drivers to slow down and shift to a non-adjacent lane when passing a stationary emergency vehicle, tow truck, or other hazard vehicle with flashing lights. They also arrested 22 people for driving while intoxicated.

Across New York, state police arrested 225 people for DWI. Troopers statewide also issued 3,519 speeding tickets, 311 distracted driving tickets, 485 seat belt violations, and 211 Move Over Law violations.

Last year’s Labor Day enforcement effort netted slightly higher numbers, with 10,240 tickets issued statewide and 232 DWI arrests.
