Traffic stop in Yorktown led to the arrest of two on June 25

YORKTOWN, N.Y. —A traffic stop on the Taconic State Parkway in Yorktown led to the arrest of two men, from Poughkeepsie and the Bronx, after troopers recovered a loaded stolen handgun, New York State Police said.

On Wednesday, June 25, members of the State Police Troop K Stabilization Unit stopped a 2014 Mercedes-Benz sedan traveling northbound for violations of the state’s vehicle an traffic law. State police identified the driver as Jack Thomas, 38, and Jiovanni Atherton, 24.

With aid from the NYS Police K9 Jett, troopers conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert for illegal narcotics. Based on the alert, troopers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle.

State police said that during the search, troopers located a loaded Colt MK IV Series 70 semi-automatic handgun. Further investigation determined the gun had been reported stolen out of Vermont.

Thomas and Atherton were arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony, criminal possession of a firearm and fourth-degree criminal possession of stole property, both class E felonies.

According to state police, both men remain in custody awaiting arraignment as of Friday, June 27.
