Editor’s note: This story has been updated with a new headline. The original headline used “Yorktown assisted living” as a general description of the type of facility involved, not as the name of a specific business. There is a separate facility called Yorktown Assisted Living in town, and no employee or resident of that facility was involved.
A White Plains woman who worked at a Yorktown Heights assisted living facility is accused of stealing and using residents’ credit cards, according to the Yorktown Police Department.
Police said the case began April 29 when a resident of The Country House at 2000 Baldwin Road reported a credit card theft and unauthorized use of the card in White Plains.
A second report came May 14 from another resident at the same facility, who reported three credit cards missing from a residence, with the cards later used in Port Chester, police said.
The cases were investigated by the Yorktown Police Detective Division, which identified the suspect as Kimon Hughes, 41, of White Plains. Police said she was an employee of the facility.
Authorities said Hughes was arrested June 15 following a traffic stop.
She was charged with four counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, second-degree identity theft and third-degree attempted identity theft.
Michael Morales, executive director of The Country House in Westchester, confirmed in an email statement to Yorktown News that Hughes is no longer employed at the facility.
“The safety and well-being of our residents and staff are our highest priority,” Morales wrote. “We are aware of the arrest of a former employee in connection with this matter.”
Following arraignment, she was released on her own recognizance and is due in Yorktown Justice Court on Tuesday, June 16 at 6 p.m.
Police said the investigation was completed with cooperation from The Country House administration.
“When these concerns first came to light, we reported them to the Yorktown Police Department and cooperated fully with their investigation. We understand the investigation remains active and will continue to support law enforcement as it proceeds,” Morales wrote. “Out of respect for our residents' privacy and the ongoing legal process, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
