Juel Claire Carruthers was the first child born to Raymond and Alice McCue on September 20th, 1930, Bronx N.Y. She passed away quietly at her home in Bedford Village on November 28, 2024.

She is predeceased by her husband, Gordon Carruthers, MD, her parents and her sister Loretta Nester (d 2005) and her brother Raymond McCue. She is survived by brother Arthur Harry McCue.

Juel attended St. Benedict School, Bronx, N.Y. and the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Pelham, N.Y. She enjoyed sports as a child especially ice skating. Juel would frequently race during the weekends at the local parks and would arrive home with various trophies and medals.

She met her future husband, John Gordon Carruthers, MD while working at the Bronx Department for Children’s Services. Gordon was working at the City National Bank while attending medical school. They were married on September 20th, 1956, at St. Benedict’s Church, Bronx. N.Y.

They moved to Bedford Village and after several rentals, they built their dream home in 1961. By then, they had four of their 5 children: Elizabeth Carruthers Peker, Peter Gibson Carruthers, Andrew Gordon Carruthers, and John Raymond Carruthers. Their 5th child, Julie Alice Stafford joined the family in 1968 and completed the family.

Juel continued her love of sports, playing golf and joining the Town of Bedford Tennis League. She was a tough competitor who brought home several trophies. Sunday football was mandatory, and many Sunday dinners were delayed due to a game being held overtime. Juel was a lifetime Rangers fan and would often go down to the ice rink at Playland to watch them practice. In her spare time, she loved sewing and quilting.

Juel coached the boy’s tennis team at Archbishop Stephanic High School while her sons attended the school.

She and Gordon built a second home on Nantucket in 1996. There, she continued her love of crafting by learning how to weave Nantucket baskets. She spent time volunteering at the Nantucket Thrift shop. Juel was well known on the island for her outgoing personality.

Juel is survived by 9 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.

A small memorial service is planned sometime in May. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Artists Association of Nantucket at https://www.nantucketarts.org/ donate.
