A wooded area of North Salem was the scene of a brief manhunt after someone fled after being pulled over by police on Route 684 exit ramp on Thursday, Sept. 24.
Around 1:57 p.m. that day, an alert went out concerning a person who was wanted by Port Chester police.
A Westchester County police officer spotted the suspect's car as it passed Exit 4 in Bedford and followed it, waiting to attempt a traffic stop until other officers arrived.
The vehicle left the highway at Exit 7 in the hamlet of Purdys and was promptly pulled over by the officer.
The driver, identified as a 31-year-old Bronx man, was wanted in Port Chester, according to county police.
After he and his two passengers were detained for investigation, Port Chester police took the driver into custody at the scene and charged him with third-degree grand larceny.
While that transfer was taking place, one of the passengers bolted, running toward Route 116 and eventually into the woods near the Titicus River.
County, state and North Salem police then established a perimeter in the area. Two tracking canines were deployed. Carmel Police Department Chief Anthony Hoffmann told Halston Media. a CPD K9 unit took part in the search.
The suspect who fled — identified as 22-year-old Miguel Mendoza of Queens — was found trying to hide behind a rock and under some leaves, police said.
Police said Mendoza had initially given police a false name. He was charged with third-degree escape, second-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration and false personation, all misdemeanors.
He was booked at county police headquarters in Hawthorne.
It was also determined that there was a NYPD warrant for his arrest on fourth-degree grand larceny charges.
He was transported to the 50th Precinct in the Bronx and turned over to the NYPD.
The second passenger was identified at the scene and found to have no warrants. He was dropped off at the Purdys train station, police said.
The driver's name has yet to be released.
