It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carol Ann Powers, who left us on April 13, 2025, after a beautifully
lived life, full of love, laughter, and resilience. She touched the lives of all who knew her.
Carol was born in November of 1954, in South Weymouth, Massachusetts to Barbara and Bert Young. She passed away at 70 years young at home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Carol graduated from Hanson Regional High School in Massachusetts in 1972.
She worked locally at a garment factory making athletic wear. During that time, she got her realtor's license. Growing up in Massachusetts, she loved the Cape, any beach, sand, sea glass, sun bathing, digging for clams, and lobster rolls!
In 1983, she moved to South Salem, New York with her children, Aaron and Kristin. In 1984, she married Steven Powers at the Pound Ridge Community Church, with a wonderful reception at her in-laws' house. A fun time was had by all.
In 1987, Carol and Steve welcomed their daughter Kathryn. She completed the family. Kathryn was dragged around to all sorts of events Carol was involved with, such as the Boy Scout pancake breakfasts, Girl Scout cookie sales, PTA craft fairs, flea markets, and numerous sporting events.
In 1993, Carol started to work at Hemming Birds, a drapery workshop in Bedford Hills, New York. This became more than a job, it became a passion and a dream which combined her love of sewing, creating, and being in and around amazingly decorated houses!
In 2017, she took over the business and that's when Hemming Birds 380 was born. Carol and Steve worked side by side running the business for eight years, until its untimely closing due to health troubles.
Carol made South Salem and the surrounding areas her playground. Whether it was going to bead shows, flea markets, estate sales, or picking something up from Facebook Marketplace, she was always up for an adventure. When she said "I am going to this place", she had already been there, bought something, and had an amazing meal.
Throughout the years she learned to ski, learned how to speed skate, was a self-taught artist of anything she saw and wanted to duplicate, refinish furniture, make jewelry, or create a meal that was entirely too large and only she would like.
Carol, alongside her husband and family, fought a 16 month battle with a rare and aggressive cancer. She had a positive attitude from day one and did not let it define her time left on Earth.
We thank all the staff at Danbury Hospital for their kindness and help during these long months, always happy to see the Powers family entourage show up at her appointments or be at her bedside.
Thank you to Northwell Hospice for being with us for every step, as well as her personal doctor Larry Liebowitz, who was always there and checking in.
Carol is predeceased by her parents, Barbara and Bert Young, her sister Betsey Leydon, her amazing Aunt Juanita and Uncle Charlie Sanville, who were more like parents and role models, as well as her father-in-law Robert Powers, the anchor of the Powers family.
Carol is survived by her husband of 40 years, Steven, her children Aaron Powers, Kristin McCartney (Keith), Kathryn Powers (Kris Hopkins), and her grandchildren Zachary and Benjamin Powers and Daniel and Avery McCartney, her sister Juanita Ellis, nieces, nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Carol Powers, sisters-in-law Susan Powers and Barbara Powers (Fred), as well as her fur babies Theo and Calico, and her fur grandbabies Moose, Earl, Esmarelda, Jessy and Gamma.
Visiting hours will be at Cassidy and Flynn, 288 East Main Street, Mount Kisco, New York on April 17, 2025, from 4-8 p.m. with a service at 7 p.m. The burial will be a private family gathering.
Warm and happy colored clothes are appreciated to honor Carol's wishes.
