Dear Editor,
Having been Gwen Burke’s neighbor for 15 of the 30-plus years that she has lived in Mahopac, I look forward to her being the next Putnam County legislator from our district.
In addition to being an accomplished businesswoman and financial and environmental expert, Gwen has raised three terrific kids who attended Mahopac schools and graduated college, taught high school chemistry and math, and has been a Girl Scout leader and enthusiastic soccer mom. She’s also a dog and former guinea pig mom. And she has been a wonderful neighbor.
As a mom and former teacher myself, I get Gwen’s life experience, and I ask: who better to analyze Putnam County’s financial, environmental and infrastructure issues, make smart decisions and manage our tax dollars responsibly than a working mom who’s had to balance child rearing and community involvement with developing lesson plans in the classroom to wearing a hard hat in the field while managing environmental projects that have six and seven figure budgets and navigating complex government regulations?!
Gwen is also passionate about making Putnam work for all its residents and believes in the time-honored expression that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” She wants to see stronger support for working families, women, our significant Latino population and the LGBTQ+ community. As for our kids, Gwen agrees that a community college-trade school campus would provide higher education options as well as help with economic expansion to create more job and career opportunities for our children to stay in Putnam after high school to work and raise their families.
I can think of no one more qualified or prepared to legislate for us than Gwen Burke, and she wholeheartedly has my vote.
-Julianne Vaupen, Mahopac
