Dear Editor,
Protecting animals from cruelty and abuse shouldn't be a Republican or Democratic issue. It should be a matter of basic decency.
That's why I was pleased to see Assemblyman Matt Slater recently earn the endorsement of the World Humane Fund.
This endorsement is particularly meaningful because it recognizes a record of action, not just promises.
Last year, Slater was honored by the Putnam SPCA at its annual dinner for his commitment to combating animal cruelty. Since then, he has continued advocating for stronger protections, including supporting Tucker's Law and introducing legislation that would make animal cruelty offenses bail eligible.
These are important steps toward ensuring that those who abuse defenseless animals face meaningful consequences and that our laws take these crimes seriously.
What I find especially encouraging is the broad coalition of support Slater continues to build. From animal welfare advocates to law enforcement, educators, veterans and local community leaders, organizations representing a wide range of priorities have recognized his work.
That doesn't happen by accident. It happens when an elected official listens, builds relationships and delivers results.
At a time when politics seems increasingly divided, it's refreshing to see someone whose work brings people together around shared values.
The World Humane Fund endorsement and Putnam SPCA recognition are more than accolades. They are independent acknowledgments of Matt Slater's commitment to protecting the vulnerable and making our communities better.
That's a record worth recognizing and a commitment worth continuing.
