Yorktown News Varsity Roundup: Karaqi’s Goal Gives Lakeland the HV Cup

Posted

YORKTOWN, N.Y.— Yorktown and Lakeland soccer, field hockey and volleyball teams were in action.

LAKELAND BOYS SOCCER (6-2-1)

Lakeland 2, Somers 1

Wednesday, Sept. 25, Somers High School

Vinny Karaqi’s goal from Ryan Harmon gave Lakeland a 2-1 win against Somers to win the third edition of the Hudson Valley Cup.

“This moment felt surreal, as our team was determined to win the Hudson Valley Cup for the first time in history, not just for ourselves, but for our coaches, coach (Tim) Hourahan, (Rich) Becker, and (Nick) Jerussi,” Karaqi said. “On the goal, Ryan Harmon received the ball on the wing, and I checked in, calling for it at my feet. As he played the pass, I took a touch around the defender and scored near post with ten minutes remaining, putting us ahead 2-1. Knowing Somers is a strong team, we expected a tough battle. After the goal, we felt a sense of relief but knew we had to fight until the final whistle and secure the win.”

Lakeland’s Jonathan Lage scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the first half, with Oban Rader recording 7 saves.

“It was a huge win for us, obviously great to win our first league game and with the Hudson Valley Cup on the line. it felt good to bring it over to Lakeland,” Rader said. “The team played  really well today and we look to carry our momentum into the next game.”

Hourahan and Somers coach Brian Lanzetta created the Hudson Valley College ID camp seven years ago but wanted to do something for their hometowns as well.

“So we created a ‘cup game’ that our two teams will play annually where the winning team keeps the cup for a year,” Hourahan said. “It is a great local rivalry between two teams that really respect each other which has created memories for our players in both communities.”

Somers won the first two battles for the cup, 3-0 in 2022, and 3-1 in 2023.

Sek said the win meant everything after losing to Eastchester in the Section 1 Division 2 semifinals last year.

“The new guys this year didn’t understand but the ones from last year like me Jack Brunner and Emanuel Gojani remembered what we felt,” Sek said. “We came out a little nervous but as soon as I started getting some kills, things settled down. We wanted revenge and remembered the pain after losing to them last year.

“The first set I was the main guy as freshmen Xavier Guzman and Emanuel Gojani were still warming up to the atmosphere. But in the next few sets they woke up and Jacob Jinu. our backup libero, along with freshmen middle blockers Sid (Senoy) and Alex (Mezquita) were huge for us. We wanted vengeance and I was hungry especially. Overall it was a great team performance and Eastchester is a good team with a great coach but we wanted it more.”
