Yorktown falls to Carmel

Carmel defeated Yorktown 20-17 on a 38-yard field goal by John Kasbarian as time expired in the Huskers’ homecoming contest.

Leading Yorktown on the ground was senior quarterback Eamon Coney (7/11, 88 passing yards, TD), who rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries, with a long run of 26 yards, behind linemen Luan Sinanaj, Joe Cermele, Nick Guven, Myles Forden, and Joe Kalkowski.  

“A few scrambles and designed quarterback runs allowed me to rush for those yards,” Coney said. “Thanks to the offensive line, a few big holes opened up.” 

Tyler Caricati (11 rushes, 38 yards, TD), Jarron Sligh (6 receptions, 77 yards, TD), and Frank Ofrias (11-yard reception) also contributed to the Huskers’ offensive cause. 

Dom DeBellis led Yorktown defensively with 9 tackles, followed by 3 tackles apiece from Jaden Renzo, Brayden Guss, and Ryan Fastiggi (2 sacks), 2 tackles each by Coney and Caricati, with Anthony Cappelli, Thomas Harned, and Joseph Cermele recording 1 tackle apiece.

Lakeland 22, Nyack 20 

Friday, Sept. 25, Nyack High School 

Lakeland led 22-6 in the fourth quarter and held on for a 22-20 victory against Nyack, its third win in a row.

“It was a great team win,” said Lakeland senior captain Mike Zumatto. “Nyack gave us some long tiring drives but we stayed disciplined and got some big stops close to their end zone. Again this week, our offensive and defensive lines showed up, giving us the opportunities to score and get stops on defense.” 

Leading the Hornets offensively was Dan Horowitz (6-8, 63 yards TD), Gio LaPeruta (2-4, 10 yards, 20 rushes 119 yards, 2 TDs, 2-point conversion), Zumatto (23 rushes, 124 yards, 5-yard reception), Anthony Ray (6 receptions, 67 yards, TD, 3 rushes 48 yards), and Chris Spence (5 rushes, 15 yards, 2-point conversion, 10-yard reception). 

Zumatto (9 tackles), Ray (8 tackles), Frank Imbrogno (6 tackles, 2 for loss), Nate Horowitz (4 tackles, forced fumble, fumble recovery), Pat Gibson (4 tackles), Aidan Leonard (3 tackles, 1 sack), LaPeruta  (3 tackles), Louis Murray (2 tackles, 2 sacks, forced fumble), Zavier Alli and Scottie Samoyedny (2 tackles each), and Frank Veca, Chris Spence, and Jake Kenney (1 tackle each) did the job defensively for Lakeland. 

Lakeland will look for its fourth straight win when it hosts Mahopac at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 in the John Marano Memorial Trophy Game.

Yorktown 3, Pelham 0 

Tuesday, Sept. 22, Yorktown High School  

Lily Diaz (2G), Ella Robustelli (1G), and Zoe Ellison (1A) sparked the Huskers in their 3-0 win against Pelham.  

“Our Pelham game was definitely a battle on both ends of the field, but the key to our success came from our defensive end,” Diaz said. “Throughout the season so far, those girls along with our goalie, Sam Conboy, have held it down on the defensive end. They definitely enable us to play our best game offensively and help the whole team to feel secure when the ball comes toward them. We’re so lucky to have such a talented group of girls acting as the backbone of our team.”

Thursday, Sept. 24, Yorktown High School  

Alana D’Andraia (3G, 2A), Ava Ryan (2G, 1A), Robustelli (1G, 1A),  Grace Condron (first varsity goal), Diaz (1G), Anna Burns (1A), Emma Donnelly (1A), Maddie Murray (1A), and Conboy (2 saves) helped propel Yorktown to an 8-0 triumph against Bronxville.

Wednesday, Sept. 23, Scarsdale High School 

Lakeland blanked Scarsdale 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-22), led by Sofia Cruz with 20 assists, 10 kills and 2 blocks; Caelyn Faison with 9 kills and 2 blocks; Mia Aquart with 11 kills and 6 digs; Kelly Mallon with 11 digs and 7 kills; Amelia Mallon with 12 assists and 5 digs; and Vera Ibrahimi with 7 digs.

“Today we really connected as a team and supported each other so that whenever someone was down, they had a teammate there to pick them up,” Faison said.

Thursday, Sept. 24, Lakeland High School  

Lakeland swept Yonkers 3-0 (25-6, 25-17, 25-9), ignited by Faison with 10 kills and 4 blocks; Kelly Mallon with 10 digs and 9 kills; Cruz with 16 assists and 5 aces; Amelia Mallon with 13 assists and 5 digs; Aquart with 6 kills; Maebh Rooney with 4 kills; and Olivia Doherty with 4 kills.

Yorktown Girls Volleyball (4-3)

Arlington 3, Yorktown 1 

Tuesday, Sept. 22, Arlington High School  

Yorktown lost to Arlington 3-1 (23-25, 14-25, 25-11, 23-25), led by Sophia Delgado (9 digs, 16 assists), Mia Horn (13 digs, 3 kills, 1 block, 1 ace), Nina Fasce (13 digs, 16 assists), Emma McCoy (8 digs, 15 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces), and Kailey Alexander (2 digs, 10 kills, 6 blocks).  

Yorktown 3, Brewster 0 

Thursday, Sept. 24, Yorktown High School  

Yorktown defeated Brewster 3-0 (25-5, 25-21, 25-14) in its league opener, paced by Delgado (3 digs, 1 ace, 8 assists), Horn (8 digs, 2 kills), Fasce (5 digs, 4 aces, 14 assists), McCoy (6 digs, 12 kills, 1 block, 1 assist), and Alexander (1 dig, 8 kills, 2 blocks, 1 assist).  

“The key to the win was definitely keeping our energy high throughout the entire set and trusting the people around us to get that pass, kill, serve, etc.,” Alexander said.  

Cider Tournament  

Saturday, Sept. 26, Burnt Hills High School  

Yorktown participated in the Cider Tournament, finishing second in pool play with a 4-2 record, losing to Burnt Hills.  

Then the teams were reseeded for the gold bracket, where Yorktown was  fifth out of eight teams, losing to Cornwall in the quarterfinals.

Tuesday, Sept. 22, Lakeland High School 

Lakeland defeated Clarkstown South 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 14-25, 25-15), with Isaac Arias (9 kills, 4 blocks), Tristan Almendral (2 aces, 8 digs), Van Bui (15 assists, 6 kills, 3 blocks), Erdin Dedushaj (5 kills, 1 block) , Joseph Kim (10 assists), Luke Numme (2 kills, 2 blocks, 2 assists, 13 service points), and Logan Tolve (8 kills, 2 blocks, 12 service points) doing the job for the Hornets.  

“The key to our victory against Clarkstown South was the high energy of the team and each player’s ability to stay focused under pressure,” Bui said. “As a whole, the team made great plays and consistently supported each other on the court. Even when we were tired or unable to find the right rhythm, we were able to communicate, which helped us secure the win.”

Lakeland swept Carmel 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-14), led by Arias (10 kills 4 blocks), Bui (6 kills 14 assists), Dedushaj (4 kills), Kim (15 assists), and Tolve (9 kills, 4 aces).

Wednesday, Sept. 23, Cross Hill Academy, Yonkers 

Yorktown defeated Yonkers 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 28-26, 15-6), paced by Xavier Guzman (10 kills, 18 digs), Sid Shenoy (10 kills), and Cooper McGowan (17 assists).  

“The key to winning our match against Yonkers was by picking up our teammates and playing our game,” Guzman said. “Whenever someone made a mistake, we made sure to encourage them and keep everyone's energy high so we could stay focused as a team. We focused in on the next play and avoided worrying about what had happened already. We kept our heads up and paid attention to the play ahead.”

Lakeland fell to Horace Greeley 4-0, with Amelia Calissi making 7 saves and Brooke Cappo recording 3 saves for the Hornets.
