Dear Editor,
As a Yorktown resident, I believe experience should matter when we choose our next town supervisor.
This position carries responsibility for our tax dollars, essential services, infrastructure, and decisions that shape our community’s future.
That is why I would like Jann Mirchandani to explain what experience has prepared her to lead our town. Has she served on a Yorktown volunteer board or commission? What responsibilities has she undertaken that demonstrate her ability to oversee town government, navigate budgets, and address the competing needs of our residents?
There was also an opportunity to seek a Town Board seat in the July 2024 special election. Serving as a councilwoman would have provided firsthand experience with town operations, budgeting, and the decisions facing Yorktown. She did not run for that seat. Why did she pass up that opportunity to build a record in town government while continuing to seek the Supervisor’s office? That is a fair question voters deserve to have answered.
Volunteer boards and Town Board service offer valuable preparation for leadership. They require people to study issues, listen to neighbors, work through disagreements and make decisions with consequences for the entire community. They also give voters a record to evaluate.
Every candidate has the right to run, and new perspectives deserve a hearing. But seeking the town’s highest elected office means answering reasonable questions about qualifications. Voters deserve to know what a candidate has done and how that experience prepares them to lead.
For me, experience counts. Yorktown deserves a supervisor who can demonstrate the judgment, knowledge and record of service needed to take on the job from day one.
-Maria G. Litrenta, Yorktown
