Time to move forward on Jack DeVito Field

Posted

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank the Yorktown Town Board for its work regarding Jack DeVito Field and Veterans Plaza.

I moved to Yorktown 30 years ago to raise my family because of what a wonderful community it was—and still is today. My family and I have enjoyed countless events and activities at the field, and I am grateful to those who had the vision, dedication and desire to make Yorktown an even better place to live.

Prior to 1994, DeVito Field was not the center of community events that it is today. It was Jack DeVito, along with many Yorktown leaders, who helped create the beautiful area that residents now enjoy and cherish.

The recent renaming vote by the Town Board was the result of the VFW Post 1017's desire to honor our veterans. I understand that some members of the VFW were not happy with the new name and have continued to express their displeasure. However, the veterans were heard, extensive discussion took place and the Town Board ultimately arrived at a new name that honors both our veterans and Jack DeVito.

Now it is time to do what we have always done in Yorktown: respect the process, work together and move forward. Community, cooperation and compromise are values we should all strive for. Name-calling and disrespect do not reflect the spirit of the community I want Yorktown to be.

Thank you to our veterans for their service and thank you to the Town Board for its hard work and willingness to find a compromise.

-Tom Dunn, Yorktown
