Dear Editor,
I would like to take a moment to recognize Councilwoman Luciana Haughwout for her outstanding service as the Town Board liaison to the Recreation Commission in Yorktown. Over the past three and a half years, Luciana has been a steadfast supporter of our parks, pools and programs, and of Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Jim Martorano.
From the start of her term, she has worked tirelessly to update town legislation concerning recreation fees as they apply to developers—an important step in making sure our community resources are maintained and funded responsibly. Her professional knowledge of commercial swimming pool construction has also been invaluable to the Commission as we address a 20‑year‑old issue with pool tiles and move forward with the proper engineering and construction bids to resolve it once and for all.
It is worth noting that even before being elected, Luciana was advocating for our community spaces, including support for our pocket park at Hanover East. That same dedication has carried into her work on the Town Board, where her commitment to recreation and open spaces continues to benefit all Yorktown residents.
On behalf of many who use and enjoy our town parks, pools, fields and programs, I want to extend sincere gratitude to Luciana for her vision, expertise and unwavering dedication to strengthening Yorktown’s recreational opportunities.
-Matt Talbert, Yorktown Parks & Recreation Commisioner
