Dear Editor,
As the former president of the White Plains Police Benevolent Association, I know the difference between elected officials who talk about supporting law enforcement and those who actually deliver.
Assemblyman Matt Slater has built a record of standing with the men and women who put on the uniform every day to protect our communities.
One example is his work advancing the Detective Brian Simonsen Law, which passed with bipartisan support and was signed into law. Named in honor of an NYPD detective killed in the line of duty, this law helps combat crimes involving stolen cellphones that can put officers and innocent people at risk.
Assemblyman Slater has also secured more than $2 million in state funding for local law enforcement, helping departments invest in critical equipment, technology and public safety resources.
Beyond funding, Assemblyman Slater has advocated for the No Parole for Cop Killers Act, which would strengthen penalties for those convicted of murdering police officers. He has also brought first responders together to discuss mental health challenges and co-sponsored legislation establishing a statewide peer support program.
His record has earned support from a broad coalition of law enforcement organizations, including the Affiliated Police Associations of Westchester, Westchester County PBA, Carmel PBA, Police Conference of New York, New York State FOP, NYC PBA and NYS Troopers PBA.
After years of representing the men and women of law enforcement, I know that trust and respect are earned through actions, not words. Assemblyman Matt Slater has demonstrated his commitment through meaningful legislation, critical investments in public safety and an unwavering willingness to stand with those who protect our communities. His record speaks for itself, and I am proud to stand with him and offer my full support for his reelection to the State Assembly.
-Brian Johnson, former president, White Plains Police Benevolent Association
