Say 'no' to Navajo

Posted

Dear Editor,

The Town Board is holding a Public Hearing regarding the Navajo project. It will be held on Tuesday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall, 363 Underhill Ave.

The property near Whispering Pines is now zoned for 20 single-family homes on 2-acre lots. In contrast, the developer is proposing a massive development with 242 rental units and almost 500 cars that will destroy the quality of life we now enjoy in Yorktown. In addition, a senior housing development (AMS) has already been approved on Route 6 near the entrance to the Taconic with 180 units and 260 cars. Traffic on Route 6 is a nightmare now; imagine what traffic would be like with 760 more cars on the road!

We recently had a devastating fire in Jefferson Village. The fire engines, police and ambulances were there in less than five minutes. This would not be possible if this project is approved. No matter how many traffic studies are done, there is no space to widen Route 6! The Town Board is putting our safety in danger!

The need for sewers is lauded by the developer, who offered to put in a trunk line. However, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to hook up at a cost of $10,000 to $30,000 per home! Neither the developer nor the Town Board have offered any financial assistance to date.

The Planning Board advised the Town Board to take a holistic approach involving the surrounding areas. The Navajo project is not consistent with the existing 38 single family homes in the area. The environmental effects would be disastrous. The Conservation Board stated, “The area of the proposed extension encompasses the wetlands…Developing 250 units would greatly add to the impervious surface…We do NOT support the rezoning.” Will the Town Board disregard the advice of their own advisory boards that were put in place for the purpose of advisement?

We can’t stress enough how extremely important it is that we show our opposition by attending the public hearing in person on July 1. Let’s preserve the quality of life we all enjoy. This is an opportunity to show our elected officials that we, the people, have the power of the vote!

Please put July 1 on your calendars. Help save Yorktown, the gem of Westchester!
