Rename field to honor all veterans

Posted

Dear Editor,

The title of the field on Veterans Road is not an easy decision for the Town Board, but the controversy on the name should be resolved.

The sign on the field shows Jack DeVito Veterans Memorial Field and Track.

When a field or park is named after an individual veteran, it is usually for a Medal of Honor recipient or a local veteran who was Killed in Action (KIA).

The engraving in the Jack DeVito Memorial Gazebo that overlooks the field states “In Memory of a Fellow Lion Who Exemplified Service To His Community.”

The field is on Veterans Road directly across from the VFW and American Legion posts. The Yorktown Veterans Advisory Committee to the Board has recommended that it be called Veterans Field. This way it honors all veterans, not just one. Admittedly, this would include me, a veteran who served in Korea during the cold war.

Jack DeVito gave so much value to our community. Veterans serve our country.

The Jack DeVito Gazebo at Veterans Field pays due respect to Jack DeVito and to all the veterans who took the oath.

I ask the Town Board to make that decision.
