WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The Westchester County Health Department has cleared Mohegan Colony Association Beach in Mohegan Colony to reopen for swimming, following confirmation that a harmful algae bloom (HAB) has not been present in the water since July 22.
Under county health guidelines, beaches affected by HABs may reopen only if the algae has been absent from the swimming area for at least 24 hours. Water sampling confirmed no bloom was detected as of the last test, allowing the beach to resume operations.
However, Mohegan Beach Park District beach remains closed. The Health Department observed recurring algae blooms at the site throughout the week, prompting an extended closure until the water clears and testing can confirm safe conditions.
Dr. Sherlita Amler, the county health commissioner, said that the “beach closures are a precaution to ensure the safety and health of the public.”
Harmful algae blooms, according to Amler, are more common on hot days, when water temperatures rise.
The department will continue to monitor water quality at closed beaches and will collect reopening samples only after the harmful algae has been absent for at least 24 hours. Test results will determine when additional swim areas can safely reopen.
