MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y.—Two Mohegan Lake beaches have been closed because of harmful algae bloom in the swimming areas, the county health department announced Tuesday.

Mohegan Colony Association and Mohegan Beach Park District are the only two Westchester County-regulated beaches on Mohegan Lake. The county said in a release Tuesday that in order to reopen the beaches, “the algae must be completely cleared from the swim areas.”

After that, water samples will be taken and then submitted for analysis.

Dr. Sherlita Amler, the county health commissioner, said that the decision to close the two beaches was “a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and health of the public.”

According to Amler, harmful algae blooms like the ones being seen in Mohegan Lake are “more prevalent during hot days when water temperatures rise” and it leads “to increased bacteriological growth rates.”
