Lawrence D. Thorp, known affectionately as Larry to his friends and family, completed his earthly journey and entered into eternal rest on September 30, 2025, at the age of 89, in Somers, N.Y. Born on December 15, 1935, in the Bronx, N.Y., Larry was a man of faith, intellect and immense kindness, whose light shone brightly in the lives of all who knew him.
Larry's early years in the Bronx were the foundation of a life marked by academic achievement and a commitment to service. He pursued his education with fervor, first at Iona University and later at Vanderbilt University, where he honed his skills and passion for science. His career as a physicist and optical engineer at IBM showcased his brilliant mind, while his role as a radiation safety officer at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center reflected his dedication to the well-being of others.
Beyond his professional life, Larry was deeply involved in his church community, particularly through the Fr. John LaFarge Knights of Columbus, Council #4012, as a fourth-degree knight. Larry was a knight for more than 70 years. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him in every action and decision. As a devout Catholic, he lived his life as a testament to his beliefs, embodying the virtues of love, kindness and friendliness that are the hallmarks of a life well-lived.
Larry's love story with his beloved wife, Margaret, was one of true partnership and mutual respect. Married for 64 years, they raised a family that includes their daughters, Deirdre Thorp and Susan Thorp-Dillon, and his son-in-law, Peter Dillon. The joys of his later years were his grandchildren, Michael Barbera, Claire Dillon-Semple and Grace Dillon. Each family member was a cherished gift to Larry, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and the individuals they became.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Larry understood that his presence was a source of warmth and comfort. His loving nature extended to his friendships, which were numerous and lifelong. Larry was the kind of person who never met a stranger, and his friendly demeanor was a beacon of light in his community.
