Eagle Scout builds storage for special books

Aldo DiLaura’s project supports George Washington kindergartners

Aldo DiLaura, a senior at Lakeland High School and Boy Scout with Troop 164, completed an Eagle Scout Project to give kindergartners at George Washington Elementary School a place to store and showcase their larger books

“Big pictures help young children remember complex ideas and develop important skills like vocabulary and comprehension by engaging their creativity,” DiLaura said. “Specifically, large pictures and words help with language development and critical thinking skills.”

The bins DiLaura built provide a safe and organized environment in the classroom. The self-funded project provides a way to display the colorful books, which teachers use every day.

“Reading in kindergarten is an integral part of every day learning,” Superintendent of Schools Karen Gagliardi said. “We are so grateful for this new way to display and care for the oversized books which bring reading to life for our young students.”
