Be careful what you wish for with growth

Posted

Dear Editor,

Letter writer Michael Rambaran ("Mamdani's anti-growth policies have a local echo in Mirchandani," Oct. 9, Page 34) thinks that lack of tax incentives to potential new businesses will cause these potential businesses to open elsewhere and ultimately increase the tax burden for the rest of us.

As I see it, the increase in population and density along with the increased use of infrastructure will add very near-term costs to both the town and schools. We will need more police, EMTs, fire personnel, educators, municipal employees, etc. We will of course need the equipment/tools that these folks use; police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, desks, school buses, etc.

How about infrastructure? Our roads, parks, water resources, etc.? We will need more maintenance and repair along with replacement in fewer years. And what about the traffic and congestion? Several roads already look like Route 6 west in mid afternoon. The rapid growth is already changing the character of our town. Is that what we want?
