What was a celebrated French general, instrumental in America’s victory in the Revolutionary War, doing in Yorktown, New York, in 1782? And why was General Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau, arrested during his return visit?
The Town of Yorktown’s Heritage Preservation Commission / Yorktown 250 invites the community to uncover this intriguing and little-known chapter of local history at a special presentation on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. at the John C. Hart Memorial Library, 1130 East Main Street, Shrub Oak.
“As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, it is especially important that we uncover and share the remarkable stories that connect Yorktown, New York, to the American Revolution. General Rochambeau’s return to our community and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his reported arrest are a fascinating reminder that our local history is connected to events of international significance. We want residents, particularly our younger generations, to discover these stories, appreciate Yorktown’s important role in the struggle for American independence, and take pride in preserving this extraordinary heritage,” stated Lynn Briggs, Chairman, Yorktown Heritage Preservation Commission / Yorktown 250.
General Rochambeau commanded the French expeditionary army that joined forces with General George Washington’s Continental Army in the decisive 1781 campaign culminating in the Siege of Yorktown, Virginia. That victory helped secure American independence and cemented the historic Franco-American alliance.
But the story did not end in Virginia.
During Rochambeau’s subsequent return journey through the region, Yorktown, New York, became the setting for a remarkable episode that raises questions about military life, the movement of French troops, and the circumstances surrounding the general’s reported arrest.
In this engaging presentation, noted journalist and podcaster, Mike Allen, explores four central questions:
Why was General Rochambeau in Yorktown, New York?
What were Rochambeau and his French troops doing during their time in the area?
Why was the celebrated general arrested?
What happened next, and how did the incident unfold?
The program offers residents an opportunity to look beyond the familiar story of the American victory at Yorktown, Virginia, and discover the connections between the French military presence in the Hudson Valley and Yorktown’s own Revolutionary War heritage.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, a student of the American Revolution, or simply curious about the extraordinary events that took place in your own community, this presentation promises a fresh perspective on the people and circumstances that shaped the region’s past.
