Dear Editor,
The recent letter "A call to vote Democrat" (appearing in The Somers Record and online Oct. 9 on news.halstonmedia.com) attacks Congressman Mike Lawler while ignoring what Democratic spending proposals could cost Hudson Valley taxpayers.
As a Mahopac resident, I find that unacceptable. New Yorkers already face outrageous property taxes, electricity bills and living expenses. Enough is enough!
Property taxes: Lawler helped raise the federal SALT deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000, providing potential relief to eligible homeowners. His campaign also questions Cait Conley's property-tax status within our district.
Government spending: Conley proposes expanded childcare subsidies, housing assistance and public healthcare programs. Where's the money coming from? More taxes? More borrowing?
Energy costs: Lawler advocates exploring Indian Point's reopening to increase electricity supply. Conley opposes reopening it while promoting additional renewable-energy investments.
Public safety: Lawler supports law enforcement. Conley advocates restrictions on ICE enforcement and certain federal-local immigration partnerships.
Socialism: Government-controlled economies have historically suffered shortages, inefficiency and limited economic freedom. Conley should explain which Democratic Socialists of America policies she supports or rejects.
We need lower taxes, affordable energy, strong law enforcement and responsible spending — not endless government expansion. Democrats, ever hear the expression, "Everybody wants to dance, but nobody wants to pay the band"? That's politics at its worst: endless promises, bigger spending and ALL taxpayers stuck with the bill!
Hey Cait Conley, Hudson Valley taxpayers have had enough of political promises without price tags. Tell us what it costs, tell us who pays, and stop expecting taxpayers to write a blank check!
-Mike Dimone, Mahopac
