Somers Bakery Takes Sweet Approach to Casting Votes

SOMERS, N.Y. - Sweet!

Despite some minor blowback that forced it to post a sign urging civility, one Somers bakery has been able to happily carry on its tasty tradition of offering bipartisan election treats.

Sweet Delites Pastry Shop has been selling presidential candidate cookies for at least 17 years, said its owner, Jill, who asked to be identified by her first name only.

This is the first time she said that she can remember that anyone has made the slightest negative remark about the goodies.

The palm-size sugar cookies are covered with royal icing and an edible paper wafer bearing either former President Donald Trump’s or Vice President Kamala Harris’ name and an American flag, and then gussied up with either Republican red piping (for Trump) or Democratic blue piping (for Harris).

There are also red, white, and blue chocolate-covered Oreos fancy enough to grace any patriotic table.

What’s really neat is that the bakery is inviting customers to “cast their vote” by purchasing either Trump or Harris cookies. (This reporter bought one of each and they were both equally yummy.)

The bakery has been tallying each purchase and posting the numbers on a handmade scoreboard. It plans to continue “polling” up to Election Day.

“As long as people are buying, we’ll still do it,” Jill said, adding that the reaction has been almost completely positive.

Some folks buy one kind and some buy both.

“It’s fun. It’s nice to come into a place and not be so serious about it,” she said.

Customer Kate O’Keefe, who was there recently to purchase some carrot cake for her dad, wholeheartedly agreed.

“I think it’s great. That’s just the American spirit and ingenuity. Jill is an amazing pastry chef and it just shows that we are all in it together,” she said, smiling as she posed with a Trump version in one hand and a Harris version in the other

“And that’s what matters. It’s just a cookie and how bad can that be?” she said.
