NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Members of the North Salem Lions Club gathered on Thursday, Oct. 15, to fill special candy bags adorned with labels thanking veterans for their service and patriotism.
Club member and veteran Charlie Basler will deliver approximately 100 decorative bags filled with individually wrapped candies to VA hospitals in Montrose and Castle Point in Wappingers Falls in recognition of Veterans Day.
The bags will be placed on food trays and distributed to patients at the two hospitals.
The project was started more than 20 years ago by Janice Hellwinkel, a Lions Club member and former president, when she was a leader of the North Salem Girl Scouts. It has since become an annual community service project for the Lions Club.
Through the tradition, club members honor veterans and recognize their service, dedication and sacrifices.
