Mildred Anne Downes, known lovingly to family and friends as Milly, passed away on Oct. 14, 2026, in Cortlandt Manor, New York, at the age of 84. Born on Aug. 17, 1942, in White Plains, New York, she lived a life marked by devotion to her family, a strong work ethic, and a warm spirit that touched all who knew her.
Milly was the daughter of the late Anne E. Squires and the late Edmond Soares Perry. She was also predeceased by her stepfather, Ben Squires, and her sister, Anne Perry. These family ties were an important part of her life, and she carried the memory of her loved ones with her always. Through every stage of her life, she remained grounded in the values of loyalty, kindness, and perseverance that were evident to all who knew her.
For more than 30 years, Milly served as a secretary, a role in which she was admired for her intelligence, dependability, and thoughtful manner. She retired after a long career that included service with AIG, Honeywell, and Hewlett Packard. Her colleagues valued her steady presence and her ability to handle responsibilities with grace and professionalism. She took pride in her work and in doing it well, and her long career reflected the dedication and discipline that were hallmarks of her character.
Outside of work, Milly enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life meaningful. She was a devoted fan of the Yankees and followed the team with enthusiasm. She also loved reading, going out to dinner, especially for Italian food, and taking trips with friends. She enjoyed playing canasta and mahjong, pastimes that brought her both enjoyment and companionship. These interests reflected her love of good company, conversation, and shared experiences, and they helped define the many happy moments she created with those around her.
Milly will be remembered most for the loving, intelligent, and thoughtful way she lived her life. She had a gentle presence and a generous heart, and she made others feel welcome and valued. Her family was the center of her world, and she took great pride in her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her son, George Downes, and his wife, Rossana, as well as her daughter, Patty Ann Vargas, and her husband, Artie Vargas. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel Vargas, and Lauren and Rachel Downes, who brought her great joy and who will carry forward her memory with love.
Those who knew Milly will remember her for her kindness, her intelligence, and her steady devotion to the people and passions she held dear. She lived with quiet strength and dignity, and she found happiness in family, friendship, and the everyday moments that make a life rich and full. Her memory will remain a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, βTo know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.β Mildred Anne Downes embodied that sentiment in the way she cared for others and in the lasting impression she leaves behind. Her life was one of love, commitment, and grace, and she will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
