Mahopac junior midfielder Nick Portanova did a little bit — make that a lot — of everything in the top-seeded Wolf Pac’s 3-1 Section 1 Class AA semifinal win over No. 4 Fox Lane on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
The captain set up the game’s opening goal with a nifty cross to emerging star, junior Bryce Richardson, who finished with a header. Portanova then added a goal of his own to spot the state-ranked (No. 5) Wolf Pac a 2-0 lead, dominating from start to finish as the match's premier two-way player.
Fox Lane cut the deficit to 2-1 before senior forward Justin Beberman blasted home an insurance goal to secure the final margin. Junior midfielder Hawi Odongo also contributed an assist for Mahopac, which set an early tone against a solid Fox Lane outfit, ranked No. 13 in NYS.
With the win, the Wolf Pac advances to the Section 1 final. They will host second-seeded, state-ranked (No. 20) Lakeland on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mahopac High School where the Wolf Pac will chase the first section title in school history in their second consecutive championship appearance.
