SOMERS, N.Y. - The community is invited to attend several unique local events, including a celebration of African American artists at Reis Park!
African American Artists: The Untold Story
Please join Race Amity of Northern Westchester and Putnam on Sunday, Aug. 23, in person at the Somers Library or on Zoom.
RANWP are delighted to have a special presentation this month on African American Artists: The Untold Story. Karen M.A. Renna is an artist who retired from teaching in 2021 and recognized, as a teacher, that there were no African American artists mentioned in any of her Art History books when she first began teaching. For the 27 years that she taught, she continued to compile lists of more and more African American artists and put together her own files of their artwork. It is her joy and pleasure to share with you just a few of the artists she has collected.
Join in at 2 p.m.for a social half hour and refreshments followed by a presentation and discussion at 2:30 p.m. For those of you unable to be with us in person, this meeting will be hybrid (in person/Zoom). Please join us online at 2:30. A link will be sent the day before.

Somers Library Classic Book Group discusses "Jude the Obscure," by Thomas Hardy
From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24. Facilitated by Librarian Diana Cunningham, MLS, MPH.
This book is described as “A Heart-wrenching tale of ambition and tragedy.” It is Thomas Hardy's “haunting exploration of societal norms, personal ambition, and the human cost of unfulfilled dreams.” The novel follows the life of Jude Fawley, a stonemason with aspirations of academia, as he navigates love, societal rejection, and inner turmoil in a rigid Victorian society. Jude longs to escape his humble beginnings and join the intellectual elite. However, his lack of resources and societal constraints prove insurmountable, leading to disillusionment and heartbreak. Hardy poignantly portrays the crushing effects of class barriers and the limitations placed on ambition. A controversial love story also lies at the heart of the story.
The Somers Library Classic Book Group discusses classic titles recommended by the group, identified by surveys, and facilitated by Diana Cunningham, Librarian. The group meets bimonthly on Monday nights. Meetings are hybrid (and depending on the weather) and open to all interested Somers residents. Copies of the current title to be discussed are available at the Library. Register online or by calling the library.
