If you’re looking for a charming coastal getaway and a new town to explore, Portland, Maine, should be on your list. I recently had the chance to visit this seaside city, and it’s the kind of destination that appeals to everyone—from seniors and empty nesters to couples, food lovers, and weekend wanderers. Just about a four-hour drive from Northern Westchester, it offers a mix of history, scenery, and culinary delights.
The drive itself is a breeze. Once you’re past Hartford, the roads open up into mostly straight stretches with light traffic and very few trucks. Winter travelers shouldn’t shy away: the crisp coastal air and peaceful streets give the city a quiet charm that summer crowds can’t compete with.
Portland brims with history and scenic spots. A visit to Fort Williams Park is a must. Here, the iconic Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest lighthouse, stands proudly over the Atlantic, offering breathtaking views of crashing waves and rugged coastline. Built in 1791, the lighthouse has guided ships for centuries and is surrounded by walking paths and picnic spots, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll or a photo-worthy stop. Whether you’re admiring the historic structure up close or simply taking in the panoramic vistas of the Atlantic, it’s a highlight of any visit.
Food lovers will feel right at home. We were delighted to dine at the Leeward Restaurant, where the flavors and presentation were equally impressive. My dish, an absolute standout, was the Duck Confit, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. My husband enjoyed his Gulf of Maine scallops, served with celery root purée, hazelnut brown butter, and a shaved vegetable salad. We couldn’t resist the showstopper of the menu: the only cake dessert offered—a chocolate layer cake with hazelnut-brown sugar buttercream, candied ginger, and a rum-espresso soak. It was so perfect, it’s easy to see why they didn’t need any others.
Even in winter, this coastal gem proves a quick getaway can be just as delightful as a summer vacation. Friendly faces, memorable meals, and the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean make it a destination you truly can’t go wrong with.
