Nicholas Witkowich, a 17-year-old Lakeland High School student, has achieved the rank of chief petty officer in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, marking a milestone in his leadership development.
Witkowich is a member of the corps’ Iwo Jima Division and has participated in the program since he was younger. He completed multiple training sessions, coursework and examinations to earn the rank, according to ENS Bogdan Preda, the division’s commanding officer.
Witkowich also serves as the division’s color guard captain, a leadership role that involves carrying the U.S. and Navy flags during ceremonies. The position is considered one of the highest privileges for a cadet, Preda said.
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a youth development program for ages 10 to 18 that emphasizes leadership, discipline and personal responsibility. Cadets participate in training, assume leadership roles and help mentor younger members.
Witkowich was celebrated during the division’s monthly drill Saturday, Oct. 17, at VFW Post 1374 in Carmel. Fellow shipmates, family members and elected officials attended the celebration, including U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler, Assemblyman Matt Slater, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne and Putnam County Legislator Erin Crowley, who also serves as Lawler’s deputy district director.
