Jean Anne Frumkin of Mahopac, NY passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the age of 93. She was born in Le Roy, IL on June 29, 1932, the daughter of Joseph and Helen McDonough Phillips.
In 1949, Jean attended Mississippi State College for Women. In the early 1950’s, she joined TWA as a flight attendant. In 1958 on a charter flight, Maurice Stokes, a popular professional basketball player with the Cincinnati Royals and future Hall of Famer, suffered a seizure. Jeannie provided life support and was able to revive him for which she received a commendation and national acclaim. She was successfully promoted many times and continued there until 1963 when she married William Frumkin in Kansas City, MO. They resided in Yonkers, NY for many years while enjoying their weekend and summer home on Lake Mahopac. Together they moved there permanently in 1984. Sadly, William passed away on December 14, 2021.
While in Yonkers, she was a member of Temple Emmanuel and active in the United Jewish Appeal. She was passionate in her support of Alcoholics Anonymous and together with William, they were very generous supporters of the Mahopac Library, Putnam Hospital Center and the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department as well as many other organizations in the community. Jean was an avid tennis player and ran tennis leagues at the former Carmel Tennis and Racquetball Center. She loved to bake and entertain family and friends.
Jean is survived by her children, Karen Engelke and her husband, Thomas of Westport, CT and Jeffrey Frumkin and his wife, Shari Barkin, M.D. of Atlanta, GA; her sisters, Joan Demeranville of Daphne, AL and Mary Bond of Pensacola, FL as well as her 5 beloved grandchildren, Ben, Cora, Liam, Noah and Eric. She was predeceased by her brother, Edward Phillips.
Following Funeral Services on December 26, 2025, at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home with Rabbi Dina Rosenberg, Officiating, interment took place at Sharon Gardens Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
