Calves builds solutions with residents

Posted

Dear Editor,

For the past 10 years, I’ve worked alongside Ellen Calves to make Bedford healthier and stronger, first through Bedford 2030 and now on the Town Board. I’ve seen firsthand what makes her such an effective leader.

Ellen knows our three hamlets inside and out and understands what makes each one unique. She is committed to making Bedford a place where everyone feels welcome. Whether she’s supporting newcomer events and Pride celebrations, championing the Inclusive Initiative, or partnering with organizations across all three hamlets, Ellen shows up and brings people together. Through listening sessions, community gatherings, and an open-door policy, she gives residents opportunities to share their concerns and ideas and works to build consensus around practical solutions.

She has also helped build waste reduction programs that are now woven into our community. For example, she helped launch our community composting program and secured a New York State grant for the town to expand it with additional drop-off sites throughout the community. Since its launch, the program has helped Bedford residents divert hundreds of tons of food scraps from the waste stream. Programs like these work because Ellen builds them with residents, not for them.

Ellen brings experience, a collaborative approach and a deep commitment to Bedford. I’m proud to have worked alongside her, and am delighted to support her re-election as town supervisor.
