Guiding Eyes for the Blind expands in Yorktown with new wellness and training center

Construction is underway on Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s new wellness and training center, with major structural and exterior work progressing at the site.

The 47,000-square-foot facility at 2501 Mohansic Ave. is expected to open at the end of the year, according to town officials. The center is located about two miles from the organization’s existing headquarters.

Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman said in a press Monday that the addition at the 12-acre site will allow for support “for the nearly 200 individuals currently on the waitlist for a guide dog.”

The nonprofit said the center will expand training capacity, provide updated veterinary care, feature simulated real-life training environments, and include dedicated areas for staff and volunteers. Interior construction and specialized kennel installations are expected to begin in the coming months.

Guiding Eyes officials said it will continue to seek donations for the project. Since its founding in 1954, the organization has produced more than 10,000 guide dog teams.

“The Mohansic Avenue facility ensures that the next 10,000 will have an even more advanced start to their life-changing partnerships,” the release said.
