“It was 1-1 at half,” said Lakeland coach Greg Doell. “Somers scored four times between about 25 and 20 minutes of the second half to go up 5-1. We scored three goals in the last 15 minutes and came pretty close to tying it up. It was a great game.”

Gonzalez, who was nominated for the prestigious USA Football Heart of a Giant award (New York Giants), registered his 50th touchdown pass of his varsity career, which came on his third touchdown pass of the game.
“I thought we had a really great week of practice,” said Yorktown coach Pantelis Ypsilantis. “The players knew we needed to make some changes, we challenged them and they rose to the occasion. I feel like we were very prepared and the kids made plays when the opportunities presented themselves. They executed the game plan, played hard, and played a very clean game.”
The win was a nice bounce-back effort for the Huskers after their 28-25 loss at Fox Lane the previous week.
“One of the things that people seem to forget when they analyze these games and put these players under a microscope, is that these are kids,” Ypsilantis said. “They make mistakes and that’s okay as long as they learn from them. Sometimes failure can lead to success if you are open to the lessons it comes with. At the end of the day, my goal for these players is that they become the best version of themselves and the lessons learned over the past week forced them to make a change, and so far, it’s a change for the better. Hopefully we can build some momentum.”
Yorktown continues its season by hosting last year’s Class B state champion Rye, which is now in Class A, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 in its pink game.
