Yorktown Youth Council hosts breakfast at Beaveridge Senior Housing

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The Yorktown Youth Council, in partnership with the Town of Yorktown and the Alliance for Safe Kids, Inc. (ASK), hosted an interactive breakfast for the residents of the Beaveridge Senior Housing on Saturday, April 12. It was a wonderful morning and enjoyed by almost 40 residents, student volunteers and the distinguished guests that stopped by.

The mission of the Yorktown Youth Council is to promote positive youth involvement in the community; provide a safe forum that allows youth to express ideas, concerns and comments; and to support youth inspired community projects.

“The Yorktown Youth Council is an incredible partnership between youth, community leaders, and town officials,” Domenick Fedele, a Yorktown High School senior, said. “We look forward to building upon the success of the breakfast with seniors as we continue to work to increase youth engagement and participation in the Yorktown community.”

Fedele, a founding member of the council, said they are always looking for new members. “Any students in grades 8-12 and encouraged to join to help us in promoting positive youth involvement.”

Gillian Grabowski, a YHS junior, has worked tirelessly, making the event come to life.

“Growing up in an intergenerational home, I saw firsthand the value of connection between youth and senior citizens. After bringing my vision to the Yorktown Youth Council, we brought it to life with the breakfast with seniors at Beaveridge, bringing together high school students and the residents at Beaveridge for a morning of conversation, creativity, and community,” Grabowski, a founding member of the council, said. “Everyone in attendance enjoyed getting to know one another with the help of conversation starters at each table, decorating t-shirts together, and listening to classic hits from the 1950s in the background. With generous support from local businesses, the event was a heartwarming success—and just the beginning of many more youth-driven initiatives to come.”

Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman was in attendance, along with other members of the Town Board.

“It was an absolute pleasure to see the interaction between our youth and our seniors at Beaveridge,” he said. “The fact that this was driven by a desire by the Yorktown Youth Council makes one realize the commitment and mutual respect our residents have for each other.”

Liz Talbert, the executive director of the Alliance for Safe Kids, Inc. (ASK), serves as the adult advisor for the Yorktown Youth Council.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the way this dynamic group of youth from both the Lakeland Central School District and the Yorktown Central School District worked together to host this very thoughtful event.”

The Yorktown Youth Council would like to acknowledge the following organizations and businesses for their sponsorship: Yorktown Athletic Club, Ice Cream Emergency, Yorktown PBA, Mercury Heating & Air Conditioning, JV Bagels, Shop Rite, Uncle Giuseppe’s, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts and BJ’s. We are so grateful for their generosity and support!
