REMEMBERING SEPT. 11

Yorktown to hold commemorative ceremonies

Posted

This year marks the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Yorktown community will gather for the town’s annual Sept. 11 commemorative ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Shrub Oak Memorial Pavilion, 1130 E. Main St., next to the John C. Hart Memorial Library.

The pavilion and park were dedicated by the Town Board on Sept. 8, 2002, in memory of residents who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. Its centerpiece is a pentagon-shaped stone engraved with their names.

Five Yorktown residents, Barry McKeon, Alan Friedlander, Paul Fiore, Simon Dedvukaj, and Patrick Danahy, lost their lives in the attack. More have since passed due to 9/11-related illnesses, including Detective Mike Houlihan.

Elsewhere in town, Yorktown Elks Lodge 2324 will hold a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the lodge, 590 Waverly Road. Jefferson Village will host its ceremony at noon. Refreshments will be offered and attendees will be invited to share their Sept. 11 stories.
