The Town of Yorktown has issued a proclamation recognizing 2026 as a year to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States.

Supervisor Ed Lachterman and the Town Board recognized July 4, 2026, as a milestone marking the anniversary of the nation’s founding document and an opportunity to reflect on the ideals that shaped the country and continue to guide its democracy.

The proclamation notes that the anniversary is being recognized at the national and state levels, with communities encouraged to honor the sacrifices, achievements and civic contributions that have shaped the American story over the past 250 years.

“Yorktown will commemorate this milestone through civic engagement, educational, and community -oriented events throughout the year to reaffirm our commitment to the ideals upon which the United States of America was founded, as well as continue to work together to build a brighter future for all,” the proclamation said.

Lachterman cited several events at the July 7 Town Board meeting that he was “proud” of this year, including the unveiling of the Revolutionary War Memorial, the Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Marker and the commemoration of the Battle of Pines Bridge. He also highlighted concerts at the First Presbyterian Church and library, with more events planned in the coming weeks and months.

He acknowledged Lynn Briggs for her work on numerous events, including this year’s Rochambeau Festival, which he said had the highest attendance in the event’s history.

These events, Lachterman said, are a way for residents to “be a part of our history.”
