Support Connection receives $50K state grant

Posted

As Support Connection celebrates its 30th anniversary, the Yorktown-based nonprofit has received $50,000 in new state funding to support its peer counseling program for people affected by breast, ovarian and gynecological cancers.

State Sen. Pete Harckham visited Support Connection’s Yorktown Heights office Sept. 16 to announce the funding, which he secured through a state grant, according to a news release from his office. The money will support the organization’s free and confidential peer counseling services.

Support Connection provides emotional, social and educational support to women, their families and friends affected by cancer. Its Peer Counseling Program serves approximately 500 people each year through one-on-one peer counseling, support groups, wellness programs and educational services led by professional counselors who are cancer survivors themselves.

“Over the past 30 years, Support Connection has provided hope and support to countless people during incredibly difficult times in their lives, helping them to navigate their cancer journeys,” said Harckham. “This funding will help ensure Support Connection can continue providing the vital services that so many people and families rely on.”

Founded by Shrub Oak’s Katherine (Kathy) Quinn, Support Connection provides its services free of charge and in a confidential setting. Quinn remains the organization’s executive director. Yorktown News will feature an exclusive story on Quinn’s journey in the Oct. 1 edition.

“Over the years, Sen. Harckham has been a tireless advocate for our work to offer support and give hope to people impacted by breast, ovarian and other gynecological cancers,” Quinn said in the release, adding that the grant “this grant gives us a necessary boost to ensure that we are there for every person who needs us.”

During his visit, Harckham also presented Support Connection with a New York State Empire Award recognizing its 30 years of service to the community. Quinn received a New York State Commendation Award recognizing her leadership and longstanding commitment to helping others.

Support Connection celebrated its 30th anniversary on Sept. 10 with an event at The Briarcliff Manor.
