The Yorktown Heights Fire District will hold a special election Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Commerce Street Fire Station to decide on a $30 million bond proposal to replace its current firehouse.

The proposition seeks approval for the construction of a new three-story, 24,200-square-foot firehouse at 1916 Commerce St., the site of the existing building. The new facility would be designed to meet current building codes and safety standards. Planned improvements include higher ceilings and wider bays to fit larger apparatus, as well as additional space to support the department’s operations and training needs.

The total estimated cost of the project is $30 million. Bonds not to exceed that amount would finance the project, to be repaid through the levy and collection of taxes. If approved, the anticipated tax increase for an average taxpayer in the fire district would be about $21.12 per month. Officials said the figure is based on a home assessed at $10,500.

All residents of the fire district who were registered to vote with the Westchester County Board of Elections on or before Sept. 8 are eligible to cast ballots.
