The Lakeland Board of Education appointed new leadership during its July 2 organizational meeting, naming Michael Daly as president and Becky Burfeind as vice president for the 2026-27 academic year.
Daly, a Yorktown Heights resident, previously served as vice president of the board. He has been a board member since 2015 and is currently in a term that runs through 2027. Within the district, he serves on the management policy committee, the district youth council and the facilities committee.
A resident of the community since 1997, Daly has been active in local volunteer and youth sports organizations. He previously served as treasurer of the Lakeland Education Foundation from 2008 to 2015 and is the former director of the Shrub Oak Athletic Club’s girls basketball program, where he also coached for more than 20 years.
Professionally, Daly works as a managing director and financial advisor in Purchase for an international financial services firm. He is married with three daughters, all graduates of Lakeland High School.
Burfeind, a Cortlandt Manor resident, served as board president last year and has been on the Board of Education for four years, with a term that runs through 2027.
She has lived in the community since 2002 and works as an office manager at a financial planning firm specializing in retirement planning.
Burfeind has been a volunteer in the Lakeland Central School District for 18 years, serving in PTA roles at Van Cortlandtville Elementary School and Walter Panas High School, including the Building Emergency Response Team and as president of the Panas Parent Club.
She currently serves on the health and safety committee, management policy committee, committee membership committee and sick bank committee. She is married with two children, both graduates of Walter Panas High School.
The district also welcomed new trustees Keith Baisley, Amanda Franco and James Hedberg, who will serve terms through 2029 after winning election in the May school board election.
Lakeland High School student representatives for the 2026-27 school year are Valeria Abigail Montenegro and Tanya Antony, with Cassidy Dineen Herzog serving as alternate. Walter Panas High School representatives are Julia Fuerst-Martinez and Ashley Rajesh were selected as student board members, with Sophia Labinsky serving as alternate.
