Joshua Weiner helps bring shows to life

Posted

While many students chase the spotlight, Yorktown High School senior Joshua Weiner discovered his passion behind the scenes. What began as a middle school stage crew assignment soon grew into a love for theatre technology — and a future career built backstage.

Yorktown News caught up with Weiner as he prepares to major in theatre design and technology this fall at SUNY Purchase’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts.

When did your interest in theatre tech begin? Before my interest in theatre tech, I was actively involved in the front of the house for many performances. In middle school, I was unable to perform for the school show, so I decided to sign up to work behind the scenes as part of the stage crew. Within the first couple of days, I was appointed stage manager. Since then, I have tried all different aspects of theatre tech and have so much respect and love for each and every one of them.

Do you plan to continue in tech after high school? I plan to continue my theatre tech journey after high school, as a technical director. In the fall, I will be attending SUNY Purchase's Conservatory of Theatre Arts where I will major in Theatre Design/Technology.

Who inspires you?  One person who inspires me is a professor at SUNY Purchase, David Grill. Professor Grill is a lighting designer and an Associate Professor of Theatre Design/Technology. I admire all of his accomplishments as well as his teachings. Another person who inspires me is John Moore. He is a local retired audio engineer who has taught me so many things in the field of sound. I admire that, even in his retirement, he still works sound jobs, while also spending a lot of time with his family.

What makes theatre tech challenging? The thing that makes theatre tech so challenging is that there are always new obstacles arising within a show. There were many moments during shows where my team and I felt accomplished because we fixed one thing, but soon found another challenge before us. With each new issue, however, I feel that I learn something new.

Which teacher has been especially influential to you in your artistic or tech pursuits? To be honest, it would be hard to choose only one teacher. Mr. [Daniel] Moore and Ms. [Emily] Kluga have been so influential in my artistic journey. The two of them gave me so many opportunities, allowing me to tap into my artistic abilities. Mr. Moore has been so patient with me over the years. He has been open to my ideas and is always teaching me more and more. Since freshman year, Ms. Kluga has shown me so much support. Although I was not a band member, she always made me feel welcome and taught me amazing life lessons that I will take with me into my future.

How do you spend your free time? In my free time, I like to spend time with my dogs, go to the gym, and spend time with my family and friends. I also work at various local theaters.

What are the top five songs in your playlist? “Voices in My Head” by Jerk, “Look at Us” by Addict Ameba, Joshua Idehen, “I Think I Like When It Rains” by WILLIS, “Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Light Orchestra, “Art of life” by Lesfm
