The library is renovating! Temporary closure and service changes begin this month

The John C. Hart Memorial Library will begin a major interior renovation of its main public area this fall, marking the first comprehensive renovation of the building’s central library space in nearly 40 years.

“After listening to patrons through multiple surveys, the library is investing in a more comfortable, welcoming, and functional interior,” said Library Director Yvonne Cech. “You spoke. We listened.”

The library’s main adult area will close early, at 5 p.m. Sept. 28, following the conclusion of the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale. The entire library will be closed Sept. 29 and 30 as the interior renovation begins.

Temporary “mini library” services will begin Oct. 1 in the Community Room. Some services, public spaces, collections and equipment will be temporarily unavailable or limited as staff work to continue providing essential services.

The Children’s Room is expected to remain open for most of the renovation period, as it is not included in this phase of work.

Adult drop-ins, including Mah Jongg, Canasta and quilting, will be temporarily moved to a space inside the Jefferson Valley Mall beginning Sept. 21. Patrons can find these drop-ins by entering through the mall’s upper-level main entrance, where a library staff member will be on-site to provide directions.

The drop-in programs will run at the mall on the same days and times they normally run at the library. Visit the library’s website or call to confirm times.

While modernization work will continue through at least the end of 2026, the library expects to reopen after the main interior work is complete, by the second week of November, subject to construction progress.

Patrons are encouraged to visit before the closure to borrow books, movies and other materials to enjoy during the renovation. Due dates for items borrowed before and during the renovation will be extended, and fines will be suspended.

Mah Jongg, Canasta and the quilting group will be able to meet off-site while renovation work is underway. Patrons may enter the Jefferson Valley Mall via the upper-level main entrance at 650 Lee Blvd., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598. Upon entering, patrons will see a large banner reading “John C. Hart Library.” A library staff member also will be on-site to help direct patrons.

These programs will run at the mall on the same days and times they normally run at the library:

Mah Jongg (A): Mondays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and Fridays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Canasta (A): Wednesdays, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
