While the Westchester vote count continues, state Sen. Pete Harckham's staff says the veteran incumbent is on course to retain his seat representing New York's 40th Senate District over challenger Yorktown Councilman Sergio Esposito.
In a press release, Harckham's office noted that he carries a 19,000-vote lead into the final phase of ballot counting, which has continued into Thursday due to an issue with voting machines on Election Day.
"Pete Harckham is on a trajectory for re-election to a fifth term in the New York State Senate," the press release said. "Right now, Harckham is carrying a 19,000-vote lead into the final counting of Westchester ballots."
Harckham's camp said it expects "a historic margin of victory" and believes he will finish with almost 60 percent of the vote.
The press release said there were about 29,000 votes still to be counted when it was issued, though Halston Media has not confirmed the numbers as the count is ongoing.
According to the release, Harckham has won every town in Putnam County except Carmel and significantly improved his performance in Rockland County from 2024. The release said Harckham was leading in all but two towns in the district.
Esposito declined to comment, as he is waiting for the ballot counting to be completed.
