The Yorktown Town Board referred out for comment a proposed local law that would require contractors bidding on town projects costing at least $500,000 to have a state-approved apprenticeship program. The requirement would also apply to subcontractors. The county has a similar requirement for contracts of $250,000 or more.
Councilwoman Susan Siegel said she supports apprenticeship programs but raised concerns that the requirement could narrow the pool of potential bidders on town contracts, potentially increasing costs for taxpayers.
